چکیده

Descriptive models of music cognition propose various principles as underlying melodic expectancy, however there is very little discussion regarding the processes involved in the acquisition of melodic expectation. To explore the potential role of learning processes, a simple recurrent network (SRN) was trained on a set of musical sequences to examine the degree to which the principles described by Schellenberg’s (1997) twofactor model might be learned through musical exposure. The principle of pitch proximity, but not pitch reversal constrained the model’s expectations of tones following melodic fragments. Implications for this model in the area of music perception and sequential modeling are discussed, as are potential extensions of this simple system.

Linking melodic expectation to expressive performance timing and perceived musical tension.

This research explored the relations between the predictability of musical structure, expressive timing in performance, and listeners' perceived musical tension. Studies analyzing the influence of expressive timing on listeners' affective responses have been constrained by the fact that, in most pieces, the notated durations limit performers' interpretive freedom. To circumvent this issue, we f...

Effects of context on electrophysiological response to musical accents.

Listeners' aesthetic and emotional responses to music typically occur in the context of long musical passages that contain structures defined in terms of the events that precede them. We describe an electrophysiological study of listeners' brain responses to musical accents that coincided in longer musical sequences. Musically trained listeners performed a timbre-change detection task in which ...

Learning non-local dependencies.

This paper addresses the nature of the temporary storage buffer used in implicit or statistical learning. Kuhn and Dienes [Kuhn, G., and Dienes, Z. (2005). Implicit learning of nonlocal musical rules: implicitly learning more than chunks. Journal of Experimental Psychology-Learning Memory and Cognition, 31(6) 1417-1432] showed that people could implicitly learn a musical rule that was solely ba...

Effects of pitch and timing expectancy on musical emotion

Pitch and timing information work hand in hand to create a coherent piece of music; but what happens when this information goes against the norm? Relationships between musical expectancy and emotional responses were investigated in a study conducted with 40 participants: 20 musicians and 20 non-musicians. Participants took part in one of two behavioural paradigms measuring continuous expectancy...

Expectancy effects in memory for melodies.

Two experiments explored the relation between melodic expectancy and melodic memory. In Experiment 1, listeners rated the degree to which different endings confirmed their expectations for a set of melodies. After providing these expectancy ratings, listeners received a recognition memory test in which they discriminated previously heard melodies from new melodies. Recognition memory in this ta...
